CBD and Weight Loss

Consumers who are seeking relief from a variety of health conditions, from anxiety to insomnia, chronic pain, and more, are utilizing CBD as a natural alternative to traditional treatment options. While there have been some studies on the effects of CBD on these various health conditions, much more research is needed to conclusively determine how CBD can benefit health and well-being.

One often-cited benefit of CBD is its potential to aid weight loss. Some early research has shown some possible positive effects, yet there’s no conclusive evidence to date to indicate that CBD is a viable weight-loss aid. To gain some insight into the perception of CBD as a weight loss aid, we reached out to a panel of health and fitness experts and asked them to answer this question:

“Here’s what people need to know when it comes to CBD and weight loss…”

1) CBD oil is not regulated by the FDA as a controlled or prescription drug.

2) CBD Can help to reduce stress and therefore comfort eating.

3) Take an oil tincture, under the tongue for 30 seconds, then swallow. Your CBD oil dose for weight loss via appetite control will be between 2.5 mg – 20 mg per day of a quality CBD product.

4) A 2012 study in animals correlated CBD with a reduction in appetite.

5) A study done in 2016 suggested that CBD helps to increase the percentage of brown fat, which burns calories more readily than white fat.

There is also some evidence that CBD may reduce disturbances in metabolism that predispose people to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Dr. Richard Harris

@DrHarrisMD

Dr. Richard Harris is the Founder of Great Health and Wellness, a personalized medicine company. He has over 15 years of healthcare experience as a personal trainer, pharmacist, and holistic physician. He is a board-certified internal medicine physician and board-certified pharmacist.

“CBD has direct and indirect effects that could help any fat loss strategy…”

1.) CBD has been shown to activate brown fat. Brown fat is metabolically active fat mainly used to help generate heat. The higher the percentage of brown fat we have, the more calories we burn per day. It is essential to maintain a calorie deficit while trying to lose fat, and CBD can help achieve that.

2.) CBD helps with stress. The process of fat accumulation and loss is a complex process in the body requiring numerous hormones, inputs, and outputs. Chronic stress elevates cortisol, and cortisol leads to elevated blood sugars and fat deposition (especially central body fat). By lowering stress levels, CBD helps regulate the stress hormone response and can thus aid fat loss.

3). CBD can help you sleep at night. Insomnia and sleep deprivation are associated with a host of chronic diseases including obesity. Proper sleep helps our body recover. The data on CBD and sleep is mixed, but I have found in my practice and in my own personal use that it helps maintain restful, restorative sleep. Lack of sleep raises the stress hormone cortisol that I mentioned earlier.

4.) CBD helps combat inflammation. Chronic inflammation can lead to insulin resistance, which is the mechanism behind diabetes. When our bodies become inefficient at using insulin effectively, weight gain is the result. By lowering inflammation levels, CBD can help prepare the body to be in a state to lose unwanted body fat.

Dr. Ankush Patel, MD received certification of the honors degrees of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and Bachelor of Obstetrics (Mb Bch, BAO) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, a recognized college of the National University of Ireland. He has been conferred with Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Ireland (LRCP SI).

“There is currently a paucity of conclusive evidence directly linking the use of CBD to weight loss…”

However, there are findings within scientific literature that could suggest a potential association between the two that is worth further exploration. Current literature has suggested that CBD impairs the effect of a receptor within the body that has been linked to certain adverse effects of obesity, such as type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

CBD’s action on this receptor was also noted to have an effect on appetite reduction, which could indicate a positive role in combating obesity. There is also literature to suggest that CBD may have an effect in ramping up the body’s metabolism in regard to fat breakdown. It is important to note that studies of this nature are currently few and far-between, and in order to actually make a conclusive determination regarding the effect of CBD and weight loss, much more research is needed.

“CBD is a natural compound from the cannabis plant which is believed to aid in weight loss…”

The following are some claims regarding CBD, but there is not enough evidence to prove these theories:

  • CBD causes appetite suppression. People who use cannabis tend to feel less hungry.
  • CBD turns bad fat into good fat. It converts white fat into brown fat and stimulates the body to breakdown the fats more efficiently.
  • CBD helps to reduce metabolic disorders. It reduces cholesterol, blood sugar level, and improves liver health.

Important factors to consider about CBD:

  • CBD cannot replace your healthy diet and exercise. Just by adding CBD to your diet, without exercise or a healthy diet, you will not see any results.
  • CBD is a complementary therapy, and each person might need a different dose. People with more weight or frequent users of CBD might need a higher dose, whereas sensitive people might require a very small amount.
  • CBD may interact with your medications.

“CBD is a cannabinoid present in cannabis plants…”

It accounts for up to 40% of the plant’s extract. While research on the link between CBD and weight loss is still at an early stage, initial results suggest that this extract might aid weight loss in different ways.

  • It reduces appetite. While THC (the psychoactive component of cannabis) could increase appetite, CBD does not. Some studies conducted on animals show an appetite-suppressing effect. Also, anecdotal knowledge tells us that CBD’s calming effect could reduce appetite. It’s important to note there are no large studies conducted on humans to this day.
  • It could help to turn white fat into brown fat. White fat is responsible for increasing the risk of many cardiovascular diseases and other chronic conditions such as diabetes. Brown fat is necessary for thermogenesis, or the process of producing heat and burning calories.
  • It helps burn fat overall. A 2018 study shows that in addition to turning white fat into brown fat, CBD also helps breaking down fats more efficiently. This is promising news for doctors treating obesity and patients.
  • It could decrease the risk of metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. CBD helps by blocking CB1 receptors in fat tissue. Overactive CB receptors in the body have been linked with a higher risk of obesity and metabolic disease.

“CBD is not a traditional weight loss supplement…”

That being said, many consumers report weight loss as a welcomed “side effect” once they add CBD into their daily routine. The reason being, CBD interacts with our Endocannabinoid System (ECS) – a system of physiology that is responsible for maintaining the body’s homeostasis, or balance. Functions like sleep, mood, and appetite are typically the first to see improvements when taking a quality CBD product.

What makes this system even more interesting is that it has bidirectional effects, so in order for the ECS to be able to maintain cellular balance, it has the capacity to influence physiology in opposite directions. For example, high and low blood pressure, or in this case, appetite suppressant or appetite stimulant. The body will respond accordingly to what is needed to bring it back into balance. Our consumers have reported less cravings and therefore less snacking, which for them has resulted in weight loss. On the flip side, we have had a few consumers who were struggling with being TOO thin who have been able to add on pounds and bring them to a healthier weight.

“There are many different opinions about CBD and weight loss; however, facts and studies show that it can be effective…”

People with a slow metabolism tend to put on weight much faster than those with a fast metabolism. Luckily, CBD can boost it by interacting with CB1 and CB2 receptors that are responsible for weight and metabolism regulation. What’s more, even though many people are afraid of feeling hungry after using CBD, this issue is mostly associated with THC. As you know, CBD can contain only up to 0.3% of THC, so, there’s nothing to worry about. Moreover, many of us are “stress eaters” and tend to overeat once we experience stress and anxiety. It’s known that CBD can solve these issues, and it could stop you from “eating your feelings.”

“Recent studies have shown that CBD plays a key role in reducing weight…”

This is based on the fact that CBD intake is accompanied by low food consumption and high metabolism. However, much of the study was done on rats, hence more research needs to be done on the same.

From a realistic point of view, CBD helps in weight loss. This is backed by the fact that most marijuana users have lower body weights.

“I think the primary thing to keep in mind is to stay hydrated to avoid getting too hungry…”

CBD is a relaxant and a derivative of cannabis. So, the trick is to always have a glass of water when you consume CBD, or you will end up gaining weight instead of losing it!

When we are well hydrated, we feel fuller, which allows us to eat less food without feeling hungry. When our body is dehydrated, we feel a lot hungrier, at least psychologically, which can lead to overeating. Aside from drinking plenty of fluids, if you use CBD products, you can also carry around hydrating snacks, such as apples or berries. Fruits with plenty of

vitamin C are ideal, as it interacts well with CBD, creating a positive natural synergy.

“The research on CBD has opened our eyes to the multiple ways CBD can help improve our overall health…”

What most people don’t know, though, is that CBD has a connection to sleep and weight loss. Most research, although still inconclusive, shows similar qualities that CBD and sleep aids share: they both help calm users down, which makes them fall asleep even faster. Having better sleep practices and getting a good amount of sleep helps balance out leptin and ghrelin, which are appetite hormones that play crucial roles in one’s diet and weight loss.

“Researchers have not yet proven that CBD can effectively contribute to weight loss…”

However, understanding how CBD works, professionals can suggest that there is the potential for weight loss when an ongoing CBD regimen is implemented. With minimal side effects and risks associated with CBD use, there will hopefully be more research into the use of CBD and weight loss.

One mechanism of CBD in weight loss may be in managing associated symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and chronic pain, all of which are associated with weight problems. CBD also has the potential to reduce the amount of food that people consume every day. The CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain boost the metabolism when supplementing with additional CBD. When the metabolism works optimally, the body utilizes energy better and thus stores less fat. People are able to curb those unwanted cravings that can prevent them from sticking to their diet.

People associate the use of cannabis and CBD with eating more and gaining weight, but as long as you are eating healthy and a typical amount of calories for your body type, your metabolism should be able to keep up with what you’re taking in. When your body becomes out of whack, your metabolism will suffer. It can lead to extra weight that you have trouble shedding. Taking CBD on an occasional basis can also provide you with health benefits. Taking it regularly will help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Taking CBD isn’t going to be the only way that you lose weight, though. Make sure that you exercise regularly and eat right. Change your bedtime habits to get more sleep and drink plenty of water throughout the day. CBD will be an excellent complement to these practices.

“There is not a lot of research that has been done to prove if CBD can help with weight loss…”

However, there have been some studies done that indicate that using CBD oil actually can help with balancing the body.

What this means is that for those who are underweight and in need of nutritional value in their lives, CBD can help. For those who are obese and need appetite suppression, CBD can offer that, as well. Each body is different, which means CBD in every person’s body will be different.

When I was taking CBD oil on a regular basis, I wasn’t taking it necessarily for weight loss purposes. I was taking it for anxiety and depression, but I am an obese person. I did notice changes in myself while I was taking it. I was eating less and had more motivation to do things. I was more active as a whole. Now that I have stopped taking it, I do find myself gaining weight back at a rapid speed.

The key thing to remember is to get CBD oil from a reputable source. Now that it is common enough that you find it on the shelves of the drugstore, make sure you are reading the labels. You want it to be a pure form of CBD, and generally if it is higher-quality it will have the verification from a third-party lab on the label.

“There is some evidence to indicate that taking CBD may enable an individual to get more fit…”

CBD may help weight loss because of how it functions in the body. The body has an endocannabinoid framework which reacts to various mixes in the body through two cannabinoid (CB) receptors, called the CB1 and CB2 receptors.

As a rule, CB1 receptors exist predominantly in the mind and focal sensory system and are practically nonexistent in the remainder of the body. CB2 receptors, on the other hand, exist all through the body. In individuals who are overweight, CB1 receptors become progressively common across the board, particularly in greasy tissue. Along these lines, scientists accept that there might be a connection between the enactment of the CB1 receptors and stoutness.

CBD doesn’t actuate the CB receptors in a straightforward manner; they impact the body’s characteristic cannabinoids to either close off or enact the receptors. This may play a role in weight loss or other basic metabolic capacities. There is some proof to indicate that CBD can enable an individual to get more fit or help forestall metabolic issues.

Can CBD Promote Weight Loss?

CBD has been said to improve different parts of well-being, including weight loss. CBD may decrease nourishment admission and lift digestion, which could advance weight loss.

For instance, animal studies demonstrate that CBD influences weight by cooperating with CB1 and CB2 receptors in lymphoid tissue and the cerebrum. These receptors are thought to assume a significant role indigestion and nourishment consumption. In a fourteen-day study, rodents were infused with CBD every day at doses of 1.1 mg and 2.3 mg per pound of body weight (2.5 mg and 5 mg for each kg). The two doses delivered significant reductions in body weight, with the higher dose having the most significant impact.

In this study, it’s important to note that CBD was infused, not given orally. In another rodent study, CBD prompted a noteworthy decrease in nourishment admission compared to different cannabinoids, including cannabigerol and cannabinol. While such outcomes are promising, insufficient human examinations bolster these discoveries, and more research is required.

White fat is the transcendent structure, liable for putting away and providing vitality while protecting and padding your organs. It’s additionally the kind of fat most connected with incessant sicknesses — for example, diabetes and coronary illness — when amassed in overabundance. Then again, dark-colored fat is liable for creating heat by consuming calories. People with a healthy body weight will, in general, have more dark-colored fat than overweight individuals. You can change white fat to dark-colored fat by working out, getting satisfactory rest, and exposing your body to cold temperatures.

“CBD isn’t a weight loss supplement or formula…”

And although some companies market it for weight loss, there’s almost no evidence that it’s good for weight loss. There’s slight evidence that it may boost metabolism, but also evidence indicating that it increases appetite. The best case scenario is that CBD helps with stress, which makes you eat less or helps with aches and pains and lets you be more active.

“Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a natural and non-psychoactive compound of a cannabis plant…”

Recent research shows that it may play a significant role in a fat-burning process and, as a result, help in our weight loss struggle.

One of the most common claims is that CBD oil converts white fat tissue into brown-colored fat tissue, what is commonly called a fat browning. This process, for instance, increases the body’s ability to burn calories. Another popular opinion points out that regular CBD usage may decrease high cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and help to prevent the development of diabetes.

Last but not least, many enthusiasts of CBD say that they experienced a noticeable appetite reduction since they started using CBD products. Even though some of the research indicates CBD’s helpful impact on weight loss, we should all remember there is no magical method that will help us to cope with weight problems. Before we decide to try any natural or chemical supplements, we should change our eating habits and increase physical activities first.

“While research into CBD oil in relation to weight is in its early stages, results have shown that it could be a beneficial weight loss supplement…”

A review in 2017 found that people using CBD for seizures often experienced weight loss as a side effect. It also reduced food intake and weight gain in rats. More research is still needed, but it looks like CBD oil could be a useful weight loss supplement.

“There is more and more research coming out that shows that CBD can aid in weight loss…”

According to this study, it seems that activating the cannabinoid system through CBD helps promote brown fat, which is the fat in the body that helps speed up metabolism and promotes fat burning.

If you’re looking to lose weight, it’s best to add CBD into your regimen of healthy eating and fitness and not solely rely on it.

“From our research, there are two primary areas where CBD may play a role in weight loss…”

1.) Metabolism and appetite – The endocannabinoid system plays a critical role in regulating hunger and metabolism. Needless to say, a balanced appetite and proper metabolism will promote a healthy weight. However, the studies are mostly on animals, and more human research is required to support these claims.

2.) Brown fat cells – The human body holds two kinds of fat cells – white and brown. Too much white fat contributes to ailments such as heart disease and diabetes. Brown fat, on the other hand, produces energy and burns calories. There is some evidence to suggest that CBD might promote brown fat cells when combined with a healthy lifestyle (exercise, diet, sleep, etc.).

“When it comes to CBD and weight loss, here are three things people should know to better understand the interaction of CBD in the body…”

  1. CBD may help suppress appetite – Unlike its cousin tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which has been shown to stimulate hunger, CBD may actually have the reverse effect of suppressing appetite. An important study from 2018 showed that CBD may suppress appetite by helping to deactivate CB1 receptors in the body, receptors that – when activated – cause many effects, including hunger stimulation.
  2. CBD may help to burn fat – The same study from 2018 indicates that CBD may also be helpful in burning fat. Cannabinoid (CB) receptors in the body regulate thermogenesis, food intake, and inflammation, and CBD’s interaction with these CB receptors may help to convert white adipose tissue, or white fat cells, into brown fat cells, a form of fat that is more easily burned off when the person engages in exercise.
  3. Combine with diet and exercise – CBD supplements and other products are not intended to replace other measures to achieve weight loss; rather, they should be combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise to achieve the best results.

“I think the one thing that people need to know about CBD and weight loss is to be…”

Skeptical when it comes to CBD affecting weight loss. The healing properties of CBD will likely help when it comes to the side effects of obesity like restlessness and neuropathy (for type 2 diabetics, etc.). However, CBD has no known benefits when it comes to weight loss.

We know now that weight loss (burning fat) has to do with minimizing insulin production in our body. Insulin is the hormone that triggers fat production in our body. CBD has no impact on insulin production. Insulin production is triggered by sugar/carbohydrate consumption.

So, CBD may assist with losing weight in that it will help you recover from working out by easing pain. It also aids in sleep, which is an important factor when recovering from any exercise regimen.

Rat studies show promising effects of reducing weight gain in rats (human studies pending more literature review)…”

The only observed side effects were reduced sucrose preference, reduced food consumption, and body weight in the non-operated animals treated with CBD (50 mg/kg).

Chronic administration (14 days, 2.5 or 5 mg/kg i.p.) reduced the weight gain in rats.

CBD showed less serum prolactin increase (predictor of galactorrhoea and sexual dysfunction), fewer extrapyramidal symptoms measured with the Extrapyramidal Symptom Scale, and less weight gain.

There appear to be some human studies on CBD and epilepsy showing weight gain.

“People starting their CBD journey have often asked me if CBD will make them extremely hungry or give them ‘the munchies’…”

I am always happy to tell them that CBD is a natural appetite suppressant. It helps your body create a hormone called leptin, which basically tells your brain that you are full. Researchers in a 2016 study found that CBD impacts how our bodies interact with fat. According to that study, CBD helps our bodies convert bad white fat cells into preferable brown fat cells, and it improves the way our body breaks down fat.

I always tell my customers to try the basic full spectrum CBD tincture or capsule. Take a half dose twice a day. You’ll get the benefit of a variety of terpenes, cannabinoids, and flavonoids. And I always suggest tweaking your diet if weight loss is the ultimate goal. You’re already doing one positive thing by adding CBD to your routine, so just add another. The CBD will help suppress your appetite, and the improved diet only aids the weight loss process.

Always check with a doctor to make sure there’s no chance of a negative interaction with your medication.

“There is no scientific evidence that CBD has any effect on weight loss…”

Research on CBD is currently extremely limited due to legal barriers that exist in relation to studying cannabis and its derived compounds. The studies that do exist point to CBD having potential medicinal benefits for seizures and inflammation-related pain. Anything related to weight loss, anxiety, or many of the other often touted benefits of CBD and all based on anecdotal accounts, which may or may not be accurate, relevant, or applicable to all people.

If you’re thinking about giving CBD a try, consider our proprietary, full-spectrum Hemp Extract powder. It’s tasteless and odorless, dissolving completely in any food, making it an easy way to add hemp to your daily routine.
