CBD has quickly been increasing in popularity as it’s being utilized by consumers who are seeking relief from chronic pain, insomnia, and other health conditions. However, information on exactly how much to take and for what conditions is pretty scarce. The use of CBD as a therapeutic aid for potential health benefits is only in its infancy. Right now, there isn’t one standard dose that’s recommended for everyone. That’s partially because there hasn’t been enough clinical research performed yet, but also because everyone reacts to cannabidiol differently. Each person’s endocannabinoid system is slightly different, and since CBD works to interact with this system, everyone requires a slightly different dose. Your best dose depends on your weight, age, gender, and a variety of other factors.
If you want to get started with CBD, it’s important to contact your doctor. Your doctor can help you decide if CBD is right for you, especially if you’re currently taking prescription medications. Once your doctor has given you the green light, here are some general guidelines to follow when it comes to how much CBD to take.
Figuring Out the Right Amount of CBD for You
The CBD dosage that you need depends on several factors, including:
- Your age
- Your weight
- Your gender
- Your body chemistry
- The condition you’re attempting to treat
- How your endocannabinoid system interacts with CBD
- The quality of CBD you’re taking
- How you’re ingesting the CBD (i.e., oil, edibles, vaping, etc.)
Due to the interaction of all of these factors, there couldn’t possibly be a one-size-fits-all dose that’s perfect for everyone. Instead, you’re going to have to do a little bit of trial and error to find your perfect dose.
Start with a Low Dose and Gradually Increase
The current rule of thumb is to take between one and five milligrams of CBD per pound of body weight per day. Therefore, a low dose of CBD begins at around 10 milligrams to 25 milligrams. According to Green Entrepreneur, low doses of CBD may provide “antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotection effects.” If you’re using a tincture or oil, a 10 to 25 milligram dose is often the equivalent of one dropper full. In the case of capsules or gummies, it’s typically one capsule or gummy. Always inspect the packaging of your product to find out how much CBD is in a serving and what a serving consists of (such as one dropper full, two gummies, etc.). The manufacturer may also recommend a starting dose. The concentration of CBD can vary greatly between products, and the manufacturer typically knows their product best.
Always start with the lowest possible dose and evaluate how you feel over the next two or three days. If you don’t feel anything, you can slowly increase the dose by five milligrams at a time. For instance, if one dropper full of CBD oil is 10 milligrams, try one dropper for a few days. Then, you can increase your dose to one and a half droppers, if needed. If this is still ineffective, you can then move up to two full droppers.
Once you find your effective dose, you may not need to increase it further. Multiple studies, including this study performed in 2011, have shown CBD doesn’t pose the risk of tolerance like many other medications. That means that you won’t need to keep increasing the dose to get the same effects.
What is a Maximum Dose?
Higher doses of CBD might be necessary when attempting to treat more complex issues. If you’ve tried a low dose and haven’t found relief, you can try slowly working your way up to a higher dose. For instance, one study performed in 2019 found that a dose of 300 milligrams of CBD was effective at relieving anxiety associated with public speaking among study participants. Doses of 150 milligrams were ineffective for participants in this study, as were doses of 600 milligrams. This study shows that for certain conditions, larger doses of CBD than the current recommendation of one to five milligrams of CBD per pound of body weight may be needed. It also shows that mega doses of 600 milligrams or more are likely ineffective and unnecessary.
Can You Overdose on CBD?
Note that while research shows it isn’t likely that a person could overdose on CBD, you should always stick to the lowest effective dose. A 2011 review found that even mega-high doses of up to 1,500 mg a day didn’t harm users. However, CBD may cause a few unpleasant side effects, such as fatigue, diarrhea, appetite changes, and sleepiness. The potential for these side effects increases as you take more CBD. That’s why it’s important to always stick to the lowest dose that still provides you with the benefits you’re looking for.
